Manga Style Sketch Workshop (Raleigh, NC)

Join us for a Manga style sketching workshop. Turn yourself into any cartoon character you can imagine like a ninja, mecha pilot, adventurer, or fairy mermaid princess. Explore distant lands or even outer space. Discover Yokai, the fantastic creatures of Japanese mythology. Get some pointers on drawing dragons. All skill levels are welcomed as instructor can adjust and tailor the sketching exercises for each student. Typically instructor will draw a cartoon portrait of each attending student as a demo and example, and students are encouraged to design a second version of their own. Alternatively they are welcome to use my design, and start creating some comics with them. Other activities include “Challenge” exercises, where a student gets a partial drawing or layout and they have to complete it”.

Free Japanese Cuisine, Japanese Folk Dancing, Games, Live Music, and More
In celebration of its Japanese heritage, Daikin America is providing a Japanese-style festival for the communities in North Alabama.Attendees are encouraged to wear their happi coats and participate in the Japanese folk dances. Happi coats are cloth jackets, or robes, usually containing an emblem, family crest, or logo on the back, and are worn on festive occasions. Live music includes country, Cajun, rock & roll, big band, and traditional Japanese music, and each year, Daikin employees will entertain by playing the Japanese Taiko Drums.Along with traditional festival food such as hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, and soft drinks, guests are treated to Cajun jambalaya, barbeque sandwiches, and Japanese Yakisoba, a stir-fried mix of noodles, cabbage, carrots, and beef. All food and drinks are free of charge. In addition to free parking around the fairgrounds, free round-trip shuttle service will be provided to the fairgrounds from Decatur Mall and Austin High School.Displays consist of a product exhibit where guests can learn more about what Daikin-America produces. Other displays include the Daikin Homestay Program, a program where area students and teachers travel to Japan for a two-week stay. Free tethered hot-air balloon rides are also available, weather permitting.

Mobicon’s Mobile Comic Con is an annual convention held in Mobile, Alabama in May. It was re-founded in 1998, with its membership increasing each year. Mobicon’s Mobile Comic Con is a multi-genre convention with fandoms in science fiction, fantasy, gaming, comics, anime, manga, horror, paranormal and mass media. Each Mobicon’s Mobile Comic Con, fans from these genres, along with actors, artists, authors, and other media guests get together to interact with each other and participate in a number of events that are unique and pertaining to their particular interests.

This annual essay contest is organized in an effort to harness the energy, imagination and initiative of the world’s youth in promoting a culture of peace and sustainable development. It also aims to inspire society to learn from the young minds and to think about how each of us can make a difference in the world.
* This program is an activity of the UNESCO Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

THEME

“Education to Build a Better Future for All”
We live in a world with many complex problems, both local and global. What kind of education and learning would help us address these challenges and create a sustainable world and a better life for all?
Describe your concrete ideas for an ideal education.
GUIDELINES
1. Essays may be submitted by anyone up to 25 years old (as of June 15, 2016) in one of the following age categories:
a) Children (ages up to 14)  b) Youth (ages 15 – 25)
2. Essays must be 700 words or less in English, French, Spanish or German; or 1600 characters or less in Japanese, excluding essay title. Essays may be typed or printed.
3. Essays must have a cover page indicating (1) category (Children or Youth) (2) essay title (3) your name (4) address (5) phone number (6) e-mail (7) nationality (8) age as of June 15, 2016 (9) gender (10) school name (if applicable) (11) word count.
Teachers and youth directors may submit a collection of essays from their class or group.
Please enclose a list of participants’ names, ages and the name and contact information of the submitting teacher or director.
* Entries missing any of the above information will not be considered.
* Please note that the organizer is unable to confirm receipt of essays or answer individual inquiries concerning contest results.
4. Entries may be submitted by postal mail or online.
* IMPORTANT: To send your essay online, you must go to the online registration page at www.goipeace.or.jp and follow the required steps.
5. Essays must be original and unpublished. Plagiarized entries will be rejected.
6. Essays must be written by one person. Co-authored essays are not accepted.
7. Copyright of the essays entered will be assigned to the organizer.
DEADLINE
Entries must be received by June 15, 2016 (23:59 your local time).
AWARDS
The following awards will be given in the Children’s category and Youth category respectively:
1st Prize: Certificate and prize of 100,000 Yen (approx. US$880 as of February 2016)..1 entrant
2nd Prize: Certificate and prize of 50,000 Yen (approx. US$440 as of February 2016).. 2 entrants
3rd Prize: Certificate and gift ……………………………………………………………………. 5 entrants
Honorable Mention: Certificate and gift ………………………………………………………. 25 entrants
* 1st prize winners will be invited to the award ceremony in Tokyo, Japan scheduled for November 2016 and will receive the Minister of Education Award. (Travel expenses will be covered by the organizer.)
* Additional awards (Recognition for Effort, Best School Award, School Incentive Award) will be given if applicable.
* All prize winners will be announced by the end of October 2016 on the Goi Peace Foundation web site (www.goipeace.or.jp).
Certificates and gifts will be mailed to the winners in December 2016.

New Japanese Government-Sponsored (MEXT) Scholarships Available for 2017
All scholarships offer full coverage of tuition and fees, airfare, and a monthly living stipend!
ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS ARE DUE June 24, 2016.
2017 MEXT Research Student Scholarship (Graduate-Level)
2 Years Fully Paid*
This scholarship can be used to attain your Master’s degree, Ph.D, or to conduct research work in most subject areas or majors. Scholarship recipients can request to study at the university of their choice.
*If the applicant proceeds to a Master’s or Ph.D course after applying for the Research Student Scholarship, MEXT will continue to cover that student’s expenses until he or she graduates.
Japanese language proficiency, while encouraged, is not a requirement. If necessary, students will be enrolled in a six-month intensive Japanese language and culture course.

2017 MEXT Undergraduate Student Scholarship

5 Years Fully Paid*

This scholarship is for students to complete a full Undergraduate program at a Japanese university. All majors and subjects are covered!
*In the case of six-year degree programs (medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or a six-year pharmacy course), the full length of study will be covered by MEXT.
Japanese language proficiency, while encouraged, is not a requirement. If necessary, students will be enrolled in a one-year intensive Japanese language and culture course.

 

2017 MEXT Specialized Training College Student Scholarship

3 Years Fully Paid

MEXT will select an appropriate educational institution for the scholarship recipient, who may choose from the following study areas: Technology, Personal Care and Nutrition, Education and Welfare, Business, Fashion and Home Economics, or Culture and General Education.  This scholarship is for undergraduate-level study.
Japanese language proficiency, while encouraged, is not a requirement. If necessary, students will be enrolled in a one-year intensive Japanese language and culture course.
